With a history stretching across some 1,200 years, the Ikuno Silver Mine is one of Japan’s largest mines. The mine flourished under the direct control of the Edo shogunate and became Japan’s first publicly owned mine in the Meiji era. The mine itself includes over 350 km of tunnels reaching as deep as 880 m. Although the mine was closed in 1964, visitors are still able to venture into dug-out underground tunnels and see a historic representation of the rock face as well as work scenes depicted by electric models. Experience the history of the Ikuno Silver Mine, a cornerstone of modernization that continues to tell its story today.
