With groups of towers reaching toward the sky with beautiful white walls, Himeji-jo Castle is said to resemble a white heron flying through the air, earning the castle the nickname “Shirasagi-jo” (White Heron Castle). Following 5 and a half years of restoration work under the Great Heisei Renovation project, the famous chalk-white castle reopened to the public in March 2015. With a wide variety of landscapes that come and go with each changing season, the area is a common destination for photographers.
