These two kappa (demons in Japanese folklore) brothers—modeled after the kappa from Komagaiwa rock that appears in Japanese folklorist Kunio Yanagita’s “70 Years in my Hometown”—inhabit a pond inside Tsujikawayama Park near Yanagita’s birthplace and Mochimugi no Yakata Restaurant.
Gataro, the older brother, can be found on the banks of the pond while his brother, Gajiro, makes regular appearances from beneath the water of the pond itself. Child kappa began appearing alongside Gajiro in April 2017.
